The Department of Homeland Security was created after the devastating attacks of 9/11 to keep the nation better prepared against security threats, both external and internal, and act swiftly in calamities and natural disasters. The Department of Homeland Security offers many career opportunities for aspiring candidates.

The roles and responsibilities are quite varied, which may include a career in Citizenship and Immigration Services, Customs and Border Protection, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Information Analysis and Infrastructure Protection Directorate. Jobs may be on the offering in the Office of the Inspector General, Science and Technology Directorate, Secretarial Offices and U.S. Secret Services.

The main aim would be to get the business activities back on track post a disaster and to keep the critical infrastructure going. Here comes the role of emergency management specialists. They are involved in mitigation, preparedness, response or recovery activities. They come under the purview of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Homeland security also deals with protecting the information security infrastructure during a crisis.

Thus, keeping the channels of information open, a very important component during a crisis. Infrastructure protection of key services is another area where there is requirement of skilled manpower. These include services like health infrastructure, information infrastructure, transportation infrastructure as well as financial infrastructure. Other job roles include law enforcement, physical security, scientific study and other roles like language translators. Thus, a job in the Department of Homeland Security is not only challenging but serves the purpose of protecting our nation.
