Green jobs

You might have often heard the words ‘going green’ and ‘stay green’ of late. What does it signify? Increasing population means increasing demands to meet basic requirements such as food and shelter. According to the Bureau of Labor statistics, definition of green jobs is given in two ways. They are:

1. “Jobs in businesses that produce goods or provide services that benefit the environment or conserve natural resources”.
2. “Jobs in which workers’ duties involve making their establishment’s production processes more environmental friendly or use fewer natural resources”.

If our career role can contribute towards the ecological conservation or minimize damage to our planet, then it would benefit our future generations and will save our earth. Green jobs mainly depend on efficient use of renewable energy resources such as solar power, wind energy, tide energy and more. 

Wind energy : Wind energy is a renewable natural energy resource that can be used efficiently for power generation. According to a report by the Department of Energy, ‘it may be feasible for wind power to provide 20 percent of U.S. electricity needs by the year 2030’.

Solar energy : Sun is always our ultimate source of power and energy. What about its efficient use for power generation? Solar panels and installation processes are gaining wide attention in the current scenario. Aspiring students can find career opportunities in scientific research and power plant operations of solar power industry. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), ‘total U.S. solar electric capacity surpassed 2,000 megawatts in the year 2009, enough to power over 350,000 homes.

Green Construction : Green construction is quite different from the general architectural and construction work. It mainly focuses on erecting buildings that are environmental friendly and resource efficient, thereby reducing its ecological impact. Some of the career roles are landscape architects, civil engineers, urban planners, mechanical engineer, architects and more. 

Recycling : Recycling and reuse are two important processes that can be applied for conserving our natural resources. Wasted materials are collected and new products are created from those things. Drivers, sorters, industrial machinery mechanics and maintenance workers can find great career roles in this industry.

Engineering and Science : Since engineering and scientific fields are behind all the technological advancements and innovations, the concept of “staying green” should start from here. There are so many career roles in this sector that can contribute towards the environmental protection.
