Occupational therapy or simply OT is a holistic healthcare profession that helps individuals to live an independent life. The World Federation of Occupational Therapists states that ‘Occupational therapy is the treatment of physical and psychiatric conditions through specific activities to help people to reach their maximum level of function and independence’. It was recognized as medical profession in 1917 in our country with the foundation of Society for the Promotion of Occupational Therapy, which is now known as The American Occupational Therapy Association. A paralyzed person, an old age man or a child with autism disorder, whatever may be the medical trauma, one can seek the help of an occupational therapist. It does not mean that they can cure all diseases or medical illness, but occupational therapy can help in simplifying the daily tasks and live life in your own way.

If you are interested to make a career in occupational therapy, then you have to complete master’s degree program in occupational therapy. Master degree programs mainly covers topics such as occupational therapy practices, human adaptation, neuroscience, human anatomy and many more. Clinical practices and fieldworks are provided in course, through which students can gain practical skills. However, before enrolling in any OT program, ensure that the institution is accredited by Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education. Soon after completing the degree, they have to pass a national examination administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) to obtain license. Occupational therapists can discover numerous career opportunities in acute care hospitals, home health, clinics, charity services, mental health services, schools, old age homes etc.

Occupational therapists are the holistic healthcare professionals, who give the hope and confidence to the patients that they have lost in life. It is life style that they apply on specific individuals based on their environment and daily tasks. In addition to the strong academic and therapeutic knowledge, occupational therapists should posses certain skills. Some of them include a practical and creative approach towards problems, effective communication skills, analytical abilities and a great professional approach towards the job.
