overview : Chemical engineers are involved in the application of the principles of chemistry and engineering  in the production or use of chemicals and other products. Chemicals are present in our daily lives from the food we eat to the plastics we use for various purposes. Some chemical engineers may make new process designs and may invent new processes for the mass productions of certain chemicals. Some operate plant and machinery. Chemical engineers have helped develop atomic science, polymers, paper, dyes, drugs, plastics, fertilizers, foods, textiles, and chemicals. They also devise ways to make useful production from one or several raw materials and make the manufacturing processes more economical, efficient and more environmental friendly.

JOB DESCRIPTION : Chemicals play an important part in our everyday lives. We use chemicals and their derivatives in almost all the stages everyday and make use of them to make our life easier and simpler. From the fertilizers that are employed in food production to the materials we take for granted like nylon and others are all the products given to us by chemical engineers. Chemical engineers devise ways and means to mass produce these chemicals and their derivatives which we use in our everyday lives and make sure that that their production is efficient and economical.
Chemical engineers work in manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, design and construction, pulp and paper, petrochemicals, food processing, specialty chemicals, polymers, biotechnology, and environmental health and safety industries, among others. Some chemical engineers might specialize in a certain process such as polymerization or oxidation. Others may specialize in a particular field, such as nano-materials or developing certain products which also has application and knowledge of biology in them.


JOB OUTLOOK : According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there would be a growth in the number of chemical engineering jobs by 6% from 2010 to 2020. There may be good opportunities in the research and development fields and in other service industries like scientific and technical industries. You may need at least to have a graduate degree to have an edge in research related jobs.

EXPECTED JOB GROWTH : According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for chemical engineers is going to grow at 6%, slower than average for all occupations from 2010 to 2020. Overall employment in the chemical manufacturing industry is expected to continue to decline, although chemical companies will continue to employ chemical engineers to research and develop new chemicals and more efficient processes to increase output of existing chemicals. However, there will be employment growth for chemical engineers in service-providing industries, such as professional, scientific, and technical services, particularly for research in energy and the developing fields of biotechnology and nanotechnology. The median annual salary of a chemical engineer in May 2010 was $90,300.

OVERVIEWCeramic sciences and engineering involves the study of non metallic, inorganic materials which are processed at high temperatures. These include materials like porcelain, glass, brick and cement. Ceramic engineering includes the processes of purification of raw materials, the study and production of chemical compounds concerned, their formation into components and the study of their structure, composition and properties. JOB DESCRIPTION : Ceramic engineers are involved in developing of new ceramic materials as well as developing new methods and equipments for their processing. Ceramic engineers work with a variety of products ranging from glassware and electronic components to nuclear reactors and linings for blast furnaces and jet engines. Many ceramic engineers are working in the industry and also are employed in various research and development projects. One of the uses of ceramic materials is that they are used in the lining of the spacecraft that have to undergo high temperatures while leaving or entering the earth's atmosphere. 

The linings of ceramic materials protect the spacecraft from damage due to high temperature since they are heat resistant. One other application of ceramic materials is in the production of superconductors, and in nuclear reactors. The field of ceramic engineering has also its application in military where in ceramics such as alumina, boron carbide and silicon carbide have been used in bulletproof vests to repel large-caliber rifle fire. Recently, there have been advances in ceramics which include bio-ceramics, such as dental implants and synthetic bones.

JOB OUTLOOK : To enter into the field of ceramic engineering, you need at least a bachelor's degree which may take four to five years to complete. Generally, jobs in research and development require a master's degree at least. Job prospects in ceramic sciences and engineering is good since it is an upcoming field.
